Agios Nikolaos
The picturesque fishing village.
Agios Nikolaos is a picturesque fishing village of Messinian Mani a short distance from Stoupa and with a population of 425 permanent residents.
In the past, the village was called Selinitsa which means little Moon or little Helen. According to mythology, Paris landed on the beach in the area and grabbed Helen the Beautiful. The village is built right next to the sea and its inhabitants were mainly engaged in fishing and trade. In recent years, it has developed tourism and created infrastructure for hosting tourists during the summer season. In winter, the village moves at a calmer pace since tourism during the winter months is at a low level.
The predominant element of the village are the neoclassical houses but also the stone-built mansions of Maniatic architecture. In its quiet harbor, the visitor can enjoy daily fresh fish from the local boats and taste traditional Mania recipes.
Starting from the village, you can tour the majestic Taygetos, get to know the Maniac towers, the churches of Agios Myron and Agios Nikolaos, from where the village got its name, the small villages with the wonderful cobblestones , as well as the gorges of Byros and Ridomos.
Pantazi beach is located in the settlement of Agios Dimitrios. A wonderful sandy beach with clear blue waters. It is organized with deckchairs and umbrellas, and at the top there are several trees that offer their shade to the bathers. Here, there is a cafeteria, where you can enjoy your coffee or soft drink.
At a distance of about 500 meters from the beach of Agios Dimitrios is the Shelter. It is a beautiful landscape of stone slabs that reach the sea. There is also one of the largest unexploited caves in Greece with an interior decoration that is impressively decorated with stalactites.
