Stoupa
The most popular destination of the Messinian Gulf.
Its original name was Potamos, from the river that crossed it, but it was renamed Stupa from the bundles of flax (stupia) that the locals put in the sea to soften and process them easily. Stoupa is a newly built, beautiful, seaside village of Messinian Mani, which lists approximately 640 permanent residents. It is built at the foot of Taygetos, in an area overgrown with olive groves and behind two sandy coves.
It has become a pole of attraction for many vacationers because of its two incomparably beautiful beaches, Stoupa and Kalogria, but also world-famous because of the book by Nikos Kazantzakis “Life and State of Alexis Zorbas” which he wrote during the period who lived there. Kalogria is an extensive sandy beach with clear blue-green waters. It is also known as Zorbas beach, as Nikos Kazantzakis and Alexis Zorbas lived there. It is an organized beach with sunbeds and umbrellas, which attracts a crowd of visitors in the summer months. Here you can drink your coffee at one of the beach bars, do water sports and enjoy the unique sunset.
The beach of Stoupa is located right in front of the main road of the village. It is a fantastic beach with fine sand and turquoise waters. In the busy street directly above, you will find many cafes, restaurants, taverns and souvenir shops. Chalikouras beach is also very beautiful, which is secluded, pebbly with blue-green crystal waters. Recommended for those looking for a quiet beach to enjoy the sun and the sea.
In the village of Lefktro, east of Stoupa, from’ where the first inhabitants came from, there is a castle where, according to Pausanias, there was the temple of Athena with her statue. The Prastova mine in Neo Proastio, where Nikos Kazantzakis worked with Alexis Zorbas, is also accessible to tourists.
The wild natural beauty of Taygetus fascinates the visitor. Sports and mountain lovers can go cycling, hiking and mountain climbing, following unique mountain routes between mountains and gorges, caves and steep slopes.
